It seems like the biggest reason is "KDE and GNOME need systemd, so we need systemd".

In other words, systemd is winning because systemd is winning. Not because it's better.

As other people point out that's not what the og post said and also not true considering GNOME and KDE run on FreeBSD with logind.

lol

I'm not particularly a fan of systemd but the hate it gets is really strange and over the top

I love systemd but having this much of an opinion on init systems is like terminal nerd brain. Especially when every project makes it clear they want to use systemds features.

I like systemd but I don't think about systemd.

The init situation before systemd was painfully bad, and the alternatives remain worse than systemd.

The fact it has a whole kitchen bolted on to the kitchen sink at this point is annoying but i don't care as long as it works.

freebsd uses a systemd clone

i mean its just as easy as installing pipewire and using another init system (i use gentoo so it was quite easy) and all of the pots are removed

I said this on here before, but if you used sysvinit for 15 years and one day you installed a new debian server and it had systemd instead, you'd be pissed too. It's not that there was anything great about sysvinit, because there really wasn't, but some people don't like it when shit changes and if you're not one of those people now, you will be when you're older, trust me.

I've since gotten over it and now I think systemd is just fine, so even us curmudgeons can eventually accept new shit, it just takes a while.

how do you use admin computers and not be fully aware that the sands shift every half-decade.

I'm not a pro sys admin, so I don't tend to keep up with Linux. I probably only install a new server once every 2 - 3 years I bet.

I kind of enjoyed runit on Void Linux. It is VERY dead simple to the point I was overthinking stuff.

Why does Android need SystemD? It's a functioning OS.

This isn't Android. It's a Linux distribution you can run on your phone.

postmarketOS a fork (meta-distro?) of Alpine Linux which is a very lightweight distro which has some oddball choices to that end (uses musl libc, busybox, OpenRC, etc.)

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
