I once got a 90s subaru outback stuck on a frozen snowy lake and we had to tow strap that b-word out sideways, didnt break a single thing on it. Cybertrucks are a meme change my mind.

I'm a little concerned about safety involving cybertrucks.

Tesla did the steering as 100% drive by wire. There is no steering column as a failsafe.

I have a hard time believing that Tesla has worked out 100% of the potential kinks in this brand new steering system in a brand new model, to the point that no physical failsafe is required for controlling a 6,600lb doorstop traveling at 80mph.

Consider their Big Friggen Thing: the Autopilot system. That has always received the most R&D focus, yet it still made dumbass mistakes like "confusing the moon for a yellow traffic signal" and "confusing a Burger King for a stop sign".

The steering isn't using off the shelf components, either -- Elon was very cocky about how he switched to a new 48 volt system and even sent other manufacturers a snarky binder about "how to switch to 48 volt you idiots".

2/2

The biggest reasons why other manufacturers still use 12v is because really, there's not that much of an advantage to switching to 48v and most manufacturers outsource their electronics. No manufacturer wants to be the one to develop a 48v component when everyone else is still buying that 12v component that works exactly the same.

You see this rain sensor? It says Ford on it, but it's manufactured by Hella. This rain sensor (with or without a humidity sensor option) was/is also used on

Alfa Romeo / Chrysler / Dodge / Fiat / Jeep / Maserati / Ram

Buick / Cadillac / Chevrolet / GMC / Hummer

BMW / Mini / Rolls Royce

Ford / Lincoln

Hyundai / Genesis / Kia

Nissan / Infiniti (minor variant)

Jaguar / Land Rover

McLaren

Polestar / Volvo

Porsche / Audi / Volkswagen

Rivian

and finally... Tesla used it on the Model 3.

How about lane assist cameras? You'd think that's pretty manufacturer-specific. Nope! This exact camera is factory equipped on

Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep

Buick / Cadillac / Chevrolet / GMC

Hyundai / Genesis / Kia

Nissan / Infiniti

Jaguar / Land Rover

Probably some others, I'm supposed to be working

Volvo and Ram use the same camera.

Mazda and Chevrolet use the same camera.

The Ford Focus used the same camera as the BMW 550i, which was also used on the Cadillac Escalade.

If you're a new company with only 4 models making all new parts, that's fine. You can design it however you want.

But if you have been around for decades, with dozens of models, some still using parts from the mid 2000s.... it's a bit more of an ask to say "hey we need to engineer a 48 volt variant of all these parts because a competitor said so" while still turning a profit.

Considering Tesla's quality control, their normal steering columns are probably just as safe as the steer by wire. The main problem with the new electric trucks like this and the Hummer is they are so heavy and accelerate so fast there's no way they aren't going to end up getting into massive accidents

Assuming they use a digital/brushless motor system that's an abject failure of the software, electric motors are capable of crazy high torque but are not obligated to use it. My brushless impact driver has 3 power levels controlled electronically, including a low “don't destroy this small screw” setting

I've only ever rented the model X performance edition but my overall impression of a tesla is that it's a fast as frick piece of shit. The quality control was terrible and the auto pilot didnt function nearly at all on midwestern roads. It felt dangerous to even have it on. Given all that, no fricking way I'd drive something that's solely drive by wire, frick that.

What's the point of going to 48V? 12 has worked fine for decades and everything under the sun is designed for it.

A couple devices do benefit from the higher voltage, such as power steering, power brake booster, and starters, but that's about it. Hybrids don't have traditional starters and as it stands, we're doing just fine with 12 volt steering and brakes.

It's far easier to have the majority of the car remain as a 12-volt system and incorporate 48v only where it's beneficial.

Ram/Jeep have a system called eTorque that uses regenerative braking through the alternator to charge a small 48v battery pack. When you go to drive off again, the 48v system helps restart the engine faster and assists with that initial 0-5mph pushoff.

Running that system at 48v makes sense. Running the interior dome lights at 48 does not.

power steering, power brake booster

I forgot they even make electric versions of those, I usually only deal with stuff 20+ years old so generally power steering is hydraulic and brake boost is vacuum.

Yeah tbh i had to install a Noco 10a charger under the hood permanently on my wife's car. Her job is 15 minutes away, all city driving, averaging 30mph.

At a stop, the brake booster is drawing power.

When turning, the heavy 35" tires demand a lot from the power steering.

When driving, she's barely above an idle so the battery isn't charging.

It's never not started, but the FordPass modem will shut off and she can't remote start it while leaving work.

I designed and 3d printed a bracket to put an RV socket in a convenient spot, rather than dangling a cord from the bumper.

I will never trust drive by wire. I once managed to disable the automatic doors, object detection, gear indicator and for some reason active the rear view camera on my van by putting it into park while the traction control was on. Taking it out of park didn't fix it either, I had to turn it off and on a few times before my dash stopped lighting up like a Christmas tree

I was testing some stuff in my wife's car. Two weeks later, she messaged me that the car was freaking out.

Apparently when i probed a connector on the 4x4 switch panel, it opened up just a little bit so when the dashboard got warm on a sunny day, it had a loose connection.

There were a bunch more as she was driving, like lane assist, adaptive cruise, CMbB, and drive mode.

The power steering module is on the same network as all those modules faulting out.

fair but steering columns aren't 100% and almost all airplanes now are fly by wire and we are ok with that.

the weight is where I am concerned though, I still find a lot of :marseypearlclutch: about it though, the electric hummer is like 3k pounds heavier and I didn't hear a peep about how it was too heavy.

Airplanes aren't trying to stay in a lane just 150% their own width, with other airplanes coming towards them equally as fast. Some play in the controls is acceptable when the nearest vehicle is a mile away.

They do need that when they land and taxi. The engineering goals for an airplane aren't defined by what it needs the majority of operating time at 30,000 feet. The goals are defined by consistently operating safety-critical systems properly, even if briefly used.
