Somewhat off topic but this post made me think of it. Why do so many dudes need their wives/girlfriends to have the same hobbies as them? Like the obsession over “g*mer girls” and female metal heads and shit. I don't get it?

Chemistry is more important than hobbies and the happiest couples I know have nothing in common other than general life philosophies.

I was (mostly) musically incompatible with my most recent ex and it was pretty painful.

I'd play something I thought was cool and she wouldn't get it at all :jokeryouwouldntgetit: And she'd always want to play (what was to me) the most asinine pop shit imaginable and ask me what I thought of it. Or get drunk and tonedeafly shoutsing Sam Smith with her friends. I didn't want to spoil her fun, but she really couldn't sing for shit, and I fricking hate karaoke and stuff like that where the person can't sing.

In the end I started enjoying the music I liked less, because I would imagine playing it for her and her nonplussed reaction. It shouldn't have gotten under my skin but it actually did - when I hear a good new song, one thing I want to do is share it with the person most important in my life, and it was just pointless to try most of the time.

I used to just chill around the house with music on, work with music on, and so on. It was very helpful for my focus, motivation, flow, and general enjoyment of life. But after a couple of years with her, I just stopped. Even now, I'm not back to where I was. I imagine she experienced something a bit similar.

If nothing else, it made car rides painful for both of us most of the time.

Tl;dr: I don't need 100% compatibility with media consumption but a large amount of overlap is kinda necessary in some areas, like TV and especially music

Thinking more it could also be (not to get too psychoanalytical) that lots of dudes don't have close friends that you'd ordinarily do hobbies with so they want their girlfriend to be an all in one anime programming bestie and also the person they frick.

I think a lot don't have this so they're trying to find something in common :marseyaware:

Also probably depends on the hobby, if you're just gaming/watching movies you're probably not going to a friend's home after work in your 30's/40's to do so. Same with niche neurodivergent shit like above, it's online or closest family.

Foid brain take.

Having similar interests is directly related to being compatible.

Needing your partner to also like consooming the same things as you is r-slurred lol. Have you met any straight couple over 30 years old? They rarely have the same hobbies. Seeking women like that will only lead to inceldom.

If you have no interests in common with someone there will only be suffering in you future because there is zero chance you are actually compatible.

That doesn't mean they have to have all the same hobbies as you. :marseyeyeroll:

I think it's related to the fact that emotional expression only really feels meaningful around the opposite s*x. You're not just liking the same stuff, but you're sharing in the emotional impact of the thing which is otherwise impossible with anyone else.

It reminds me of my friend who can't understand why men can't unload their emotions onto each other instead of always with their partners. It just doesn't work like that.
