Re-encoding my media library as h265 to save space. This is slow as shit wtf

The space savings are incredible (40-50% file size most of the time) with no noticeable loss in quality but the encoding takes for fricking ever. This is literally going to take like a year to get through everything.

it may save you quality and time if you just redownload new HEVC encodes.

Unless you're using remuxes from bluray sources you'll going from optimized lossy h264 to optimized lossy h256. That's not a great pipeline compared to a very bloated h264 or h265 to an optimized h265.

there are encoders out there posting 2 page guides while this neighbor is just exporting shit to hevc by moving a slider. lmao

Yup. I did some encoding for shits and giggles over a summer once and you learn how much of an science it is (knowing not just the technical terminology but fully understanding what the terms do) and also an art (sometimes you need to zig even though you'd usually zag). Best just to let the neurodivergents do it unless you want a new hobby.

which scene website are you on btw?

I was never in the scene, always on private trackers. :marseyzoomer:

Tracker-wise I think the farthest I made it was Empornium and lost a Pass the Popcorn invite by a few minutes due to a missed DM. :marseyfacepalm:

I was doing encodes for fun on BaconBits because they had great guidelines on how to encode, it was a great way to experiment. :marseychemist:

The fact is I don't watch a lot of tv and movies- never have :marseyshrug: And the ones I do want to watch I'll know someone with a streaming account I can use for a night. :marseytoasty: Occasionally I'll just buy a bluray even. :marseyfry:

This has led to a lot of my prior accounts wasting away and getting locked or deleted. :marseytombstone:

add upscaling to it and the autism compounds

h265 is also super fricking slow for sure. I think they kind of assume you'll use hardware encoding equipment with it. H264 was def a sweet spot of complexity and payoff for video encoding.

EDIT: Try out a small video and AV1 encoding too, that shits insane. The worst one I used before that was VP9, it wouldn't even use multithreading back in the day due to it's design :marseyconfused2:
