Re-encoding my media library as h265 to save space. This is slow as shit wtf

The space savings are incredible (40-50% file size most of the time) with no noticeable loss in quality but the encoding takes for fricking ever. This is literally going to take like a year to get through everything.

How many people actually bother with a whole butt library in current year? What's the point when you can stream anything and everything

Same but mostly pics from the Internet era of what we thought was funny.

Oh and some porn.

lol how much do you spent on storage and what do you buy?

Jump in the discussion.

I've spent just over $4,000 on hard drives for my server. I buy the refurb 20TB Western Digital drives from serverpartdeals.

I check the SMART data and run crystaldiskmark on them before adding them to my server. Haven't had any issues yet.

Remux files are huge, and I want to neurodivergentally hoard every media file.

You can store that on exactly zero hard drives, unless you mean you getting your bussy blasted.

No I'm actually shocked tbh

My media library is foreverially stuck in 2014 or so when torrenting was king. There is just so much media available to stream now there is no point in holding on to ancient DVD rips

You can pry my numerous external hard disks of porn from my cold, dead hands. At this point it's not even about things that turn me on; it's about preserving archives of amateur fetish stuff for future generations.

Dude, this is literally pointless unless you have the originals. If you have h264 you realize its a different format? H265 isn't just H264 but smaller.

In other words, converting to H265 is layering lossy compression on top of a DIFFERENT lossy compression format... the results will be strictly worse quality.

Also as you seem to have found out its slow as balls :marseyxd:

If you have h264 its a different format, so converting is layering a another compression format on top of a different compression format which will strictly make your videos look worse.

I know but it's not worse enough for me to notice a difference.

Also the vast majority is 1080p or lower.

you'll subconciously notice, even if your forebrain is too stupid.

I use Videoproc Converter. Fast because it uses your GPU, and saves a ton on compression. Most of the time simply converting it is all you need, but there's also a specific compress option that you can customize.

Only downside is for it to work on videos over 5 minutes long you need premium. I love it so much I bought a lifetime license. Saved like 200 gigs in my porn collection!

GPU encoding is shit quality. It's only useful for streaming.

I can't tell a difference, but my stuff is only 1080p or lower. Good luck!

I messed around with it but I wasn't too impressed with the results. It was incredibly fast (like 10% of the time of the CPU encode) but to get comparable quality the file size was quite a bit larger.

Yeah. Best bet is to get a threadripper or Epyc system, those are what people who do encoding a lot use.

Or are you a fricking heathen remuxing shit?

just redownload h265 encodes dumbo

plus, AV1 is the new hot shit

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

it may save you quality and time if you just redownload new HEVC encodes.

Unless you're using remuxes from bluray sources you'll going from optimized lossy h264 to optimized lossy h256. That's not a great pipeline compared to a very bloated h264 or h265 to an optimized h265.

there are encoders out there posting 2 page guides while this neighbor is just exporting shit to hevc by moving a slider. lmao

Jump in the discussion.

Yup. I did some encoding for shits and giggles over a summer once and you learn how much of an science it is (knowing not just the technical terminology but fully understanding what the terms do) and also an art (sometimes you need to zig even though you'd usually zag). Best just to let the neurodivergents do it unless you want a new hobby.

which scene website are you on btw?

Jump in the discussion.

I was never in the scene, always on private trackers. :marseyzoomer:

Tracker-wise I think the farthest I made it was Empornium and lost a Pass the Popcorn invite by a few minutes due to a missed DM. :marseyfacepalm:

I was doing encodes for fun on BaconBits because they had great guidelines on how to encode, it was a great way to experiment. :marseychemist:

The fact is I don't watch a lot of tv and movies- never have :marseyshrug: And the ones I do want to watch I'll know someone with a streaming account I can use for a night. :marseytoasty: Occasionally I'll just buy a bluray even. :marseyfry:

This has led to a lot of my prior accounts wasting away and getting locked or deleted. :marseytombstone:

h265 is also super fricking slow for sure. I think they kind of assume you'll use hardware encoding equipment with it. H264 was def a sweet spot of complexity and payoff for video encoding.

EDIT: Try out a small video and AV1 encoding too, that shits insane. The worst one I used before that was VP9, it wouldn't even use multithreading back in the day due to it's design :marseyconfused2:

Convert them to animated webp files and then .mp3s you can just play at the same time for more savings
