The US DOT is coming for your pickup truck

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41504881

Context: The proposed standard would establish test procedures simulating a head-to-hood impact and performance requirements to minimize the risk of head injury. NHTSA estimates the new standard would save 67 lives a year.

If you think this is straggy, you can tell them by submitting a comment within the next 60 days.

There's a few HN threads on this:

:brainletmaga: large suvs are to protect the occupants. people jumping in front of it should not even factor in. I don't drive on sidewalks.

:brainletchair: anyone who drives a large pick-up truck for non-commercial reasons is a grade A butthole

:soycry: Key Ideas: Heavier vehicles are safer for their occupants but more dangerous for others: The weight of a vehicle is a critical factor in car crashes, with heavier vehicles causing more fatalities in other cars, pedestrians, and cyclists.

:marseygigachad: Sounds like a heavier car is actually safer to put me and my loved ones inside, at least for now.

:gigachad: Sounds like it's safest for me and my family to physically prevent you from doing that.

The government just passed a rule mandating all furniture come with wall bolts and meet "tipping standards" because 40 people die annually to falling bookshelves.

Humans are terrible at risk management and assessment. Dramatic but rare beats banal but common every time.

You know how the rest of the world figures that external fire escapes are good enough as a backup measure on buildings. Not the USA. We literally have building codes that cost billions of dollars a year to implement to save less lives than that. It's frikking absurd.

Shitty fire escapes were to blame for 9/11

Dual egress with the requirement hallways have to be wide enough to accommodate two wheelchairs. One of the escape routes has to be internal and fireproof, its usually cheaper to have both internal.

Its all about keeping the BIPOCs out of white neighborhoods. They can't make policy about that publicly but they just start with the premise of keep darkie down and then work backwards.

I am against this because you could far more easily pass policies in other spheres that would save far more lives annually.

I like the idea of going after the < 100 deaths stopped per year policies after we are finished with the < 1000 deaths per year policies. At least keep it linear so that people will actually get used to it.

They are already attempting to do that with speed limiters (lol).

Never in its 50-plus years in existence has the regulator issued new rules for automakers requiring them to change their vehicle designs to better prevent pedestrian fatalities.

This is just testing the waters. You'll all be driving Fiat Pandas within a decade.
