Also, even stupid authoritarian systems seem more appealing now because our world is so currently lacking in meaning. Americans in the 40's (including racists) had their faith, families, national identity, etc. as an alternative vision to what Nazis and commies offered. But modern America is lacking in comparison.
In decades past, it was easy to use Nazis as generic bad guys in large part because they represented extreme rigidity and lack of autonomy. But these days, the average young person has been hurt more by lack of structure. Media that glorifies rebellion against structure and order just doesn't ring true anymore.
That leaves us with "Nazis are bad because they're racist," which is true, but it also indicates that other anti-Nazi arguments have weakened in efficacy. Most Americans in the 40's were racist, and they still hated Nazis. Meanwhile, rhetoric about racism get thrown around enough that Nazis are just one of many many many things that are racist, which weakens any claim that they are a special sort of evil.

These are all kind of a gross oversimplifications which is the running theme here of what leads to the answer to the original flip the script narrative imo.
Nazi's were unironically so cartoony bad en masse that fighting them is literally what made WW2 "The Good War"
because even when removing a contemporary lens they were still extremely fanatical and brainwashed just like the Japanese were as well. Inversely, all of the global acts since those hard times (somehow perceived as great times by r-slurs who never had to eat government issue salted pork) have lead to the greatest era of peace in the history of humanity. 
Even when accounting for anomalous world events like sandshit or slavshit (or even Rwandan genocide shit blahblahblah), given the amount of actual people literally living right now and getting along peacefully today, the chances of violet death per capita on average have still never been lower when holding the numbers out at arms length year to year, decade to decade. 
Yeah, the resurgence(?) or rise of nazi apologia is multifactorial in part due to leftoids calling everyone Nazi's which has greatly diluted the impact and meaning, on the same hand though there is a very concerted or even unconscious effort by rightoids to also whitewash / ignore the history of the Wehrmacht to make it out to be clearly distinct as if "everyone was just following orders!"
The impact of all this bullshit in the grand scheme of things is virtually non-existent though as by and large, normal people (see: not terminally online people) can easily tell the difference between sandshit and the Holocaust, or Slavshit and the american civil war etc etc, and right now the whack narratives only serve as goonbait for mass shooters like tarrant which hasn't really changed, going back to before columbine and the romanization of spree killers. 
Overall though, the infighting between both supposed forces has still been intrinsic towards the greater effect in leading the planet into the most peaceful era by capita in the history of human kind by miles and miles (aka - kiloboners for you straggy europoors) , this is also despite the fact that the media is culpable in general for living rent free in everyone's heads because the capacity to report shit has far outpaced the rate of shit actually happening by any conventional standards and this has been going on for decades and decades since NOM. So if there's anything to get worked up about it should be the clear need for TJD
