I'm looking to get into video editing and I don't think I need all that much. These would be simple shitposts of static images and crude MS paint drawings. I'm not even talking about animation, just one frame after the other. I would like to add gifs, music, voice recordings, and sound effects though.
I'm hoping for something simple that my average performance laptop could run. And also for something free

Kden is what I use. It's free as in freedom and as in free beer. Works well enough for clipping out little chunks of videos and occasionally exporting stuff as a gif, which is really all I need. It has a few unintuitive quirks, but for my purposes it just works. Render time is always going to depend more on your hardware and the resolution of what you're making. If you want to export 4k 60fps video, your laptop is going to chug along slowly with that no matter what software you're using; if it's 720p 30fps or lower, you should be fine.
