I'm in (biology) academia and it's low-key been well-understood it was almost certainly a lab leak for a long time. It's just a big case of CYA since nobody wanted to conclusively claim so, as it would be making enemies for no good reason. People actively denying it was stupid though, the safest response field-wise has always been to say "well, we cant know for sure."

Science has turned into a game of trivia. Once people with the right credentials proclaim the 'correct' answer, the 'we believe in science' crowd fall all over themselves to find the blasphemers and denounce them as publicly as possible, mostly to show how intelligent they are. Do they stop and wonder if the people making these proclamations have reasons to lie due to political pressure, to cover their own mistakes, or are just bad at their job? Of course not.
It wouldn't be a big deal, but pressure is also brought down on other members in the field that may have alternate theories or concerns with the official conclusion. That message is rather simple, either fall in line or be ostracized and blacklisted. Once the whole thing became another political pissing match, you got with the program or you were a racist, conspiracy theorist.
