The first process Linux would run during startup, once startup got to the point of ready to run processes, used to be called init. Init did very little, mostly ran some shitty scripts that ran some other shitty scripts that ran every script in certain shitty script directories, which eventually started the processes for a fully running system.

Because the scripts were shitty, systemd promised to replace them, and has generally replaced init as process 1. But they grew mad with power and systemd started to take over more and more of a typical Linux system, deeply entangling itself.

And now the man behind systemd is working for Microsoft
