But withdrawing after so many Russians gave their lives would be maybe one of the biggest military blunders in the history of Russia, I know what Stalin would do
It's super oversimplified pop history. I haven't read it so my critique will all be second hand. But it's a book that started with a firm idea of what it wanted to say, did no rigorous study, and claimed it was right about everything.
Most serious history books will start with a theory but will critique their own theory in the text, or will just do a rigorous study and develop themes and ideas not a central hypothesis. To boil down colonialism and the power of the west to "Guns Germs and Steel" is just a huge disservice to the history meant to appeal to morons.

Would you say as a starting point itβd do more harm than good? Iβm trying so hard to teach this person close to me something about history good fricking god itβs like they slept through everything but science math and lunch
The purges made Germany underestimate Russian fighting capability pretty severely. It's possible that Hitler wouldn't have even ordered an attack in 1941 if Stalin didn't buttfrick his own army. So good on Stalin for baiting the Nazis into a war that massively drained their resources and greatly reduced loss of life in western countries in exchange for a massive Russian death toll.
The purges were definitely a factor in german underestimation of Russian fighting capability which was a factor in the decision to invade in 1941. Far from the only factor, but not insignificant.

Undoubtedly so, but if that was the standard in every military in the world all major countries would have no military command

I guess it might be better than nothing but I haven't read it and colonialization and indigenous stuff isn't something I'm super well versed in.

Stalin did this in the 40s, as a result there were no veteran officers at the start of WW2 and that made the first years so much worse for USSR

What was the event before the purges? That was the thing that not only made Germany, but the Brits and US figure out that the USSR wouldn't last long.
