They could've just cancelled the parade and played a 2 minute prerecorded speech from Putin, and that would've made more sense than the decision to go through with this

No they couldn't. The parade went through without incident, no interruption from hohol terrorists, which shows the impotence of Ukraine who threatened the parade multiple times. If they cancelled it that would mean Russia is afraid of it getting interrupted.
What this shows to Russians is everything is alright, most don't care about tanks or whatever.
