So it was a bomb onboard or an air-to-air missile. Planes don't just explode on their own. The only exception I can think of is TWA Flight 800 in the '90s and the cause of that was discovered and corrected.

There were frayed wires running through one of the fuel tanks. They short circuited causing a spark. The fuel tank was designed to be able to contain an explosion but it turned out to not be strong enough. So planes now have thicker walls around the fuel tanks.

Having watched every episode of Air Disasters, this never happens. Bad maintenance just leads to important pieces of the plane falling off. Like when they forget to put all the screws back in.
