US can't afford to micro-manage the entire World to be free from communism.

By delegating West Africa to France, the US gets to concentrate their forces in places more relevant, and France gets to keep playing its little fantasy about still being a relevant power-nation. Everyone wins.

That is until a modicum of adversity shows up and France completely loses ground in a matter of weeks.
