Yeah but considering how the russian military has fared so far I doubt there is any tactic behind this

Eh they've managed well given the force ratios. People build up Russia as a superpower and it is materiel wise but its active military in the theater is tiny, outnumbered 2 to 3 to 1 since the start when conventionally for an offensive to succeed you are supposed to have 3x men. Even as a whole, personnel wise its army is tiny despite massive defense outlay cause it tries to maintain parity with US R&D. Given that the side conscripting people off the streets is facing manpower issues against the mostly contractual military(that tbf draws from a population 3-4x larger) I think you can imagine what casualty ratios must have been like.
