I remember reading the NYTimes investigation into the Ukraine one Russia did and apparently some Soviet anti-air uses "Bow-tie" shaped shrapnel because it does more damage to aircraft than circles or blocks. And the holes kinda look like it.

The only reason I'm a bit suspicious is that the Russians have decades of experience and some of the finest systems for shooting down airliners. Compared to the usual this one is sloppy.
