Newcastle cost £300 million and gave them the opportunity to practically control an entire city. Chelsea cost ten times that and desperately need a new stadium. Yes your average Malaysian teenager is more likely to support Chelsea than Newcastle but Newcastle has history too.

I think they got a good deal actually. Newcastle was much cheaper to purchase, is the only big club in town so lot of local growth potential, and it can be easily turned into a big club through investment. And ultimately it's not about the club or "sportswashing" , but establishing business connections.
