Jose Mourinho is toxic, and his abuse of Anthony Taylor has major consequences. The scenes from Budapest airport in the aftermath of Mourinho berating Taylor were unacceptable. Mourinho is a playground bully and the only way to stop him and this happening again is by introducing severe sanctions.

The scenes at the airport were appalling and have reverberated around the world, and they're a direct consequence of Mourinho's actions, who empowered those people to act in that way. Uefa simply have to act and they need to put better procedures in place to ensure the safety of officials. Football players have their chartered flights after games but officials will be on normal, scheduled flights - added security for referees is crucial here.

I was surprised by the lack of security Taylor had in that underground car park, and that is on Uefa. There would have been the match delegate and an observer but that is not enough. What we saw was unprecedented, vitriolic and deeply unsettling.

Both Roma and Sevilla were guilty of indiscipline and gamesmanship on Wednesday night. For what happened after with Mourinho and the unacceptable abuse he directed at Taylor, I would ban Roma from European competition for between one and two seasons. Mourinho should also receive a 10-match ban.

People will say that is excessive but he deserves it and you need a stronger deterrent because managers like Mourinho, and others, believe they can get away with anything. It should be a total ban from the stadium, rather than a touchline ban. A touchline ban in Europe would still allow a manager to sit in the directors’ box with a match official. Mourinho should be banished completely.

This behaviour has a trickle down effect, right through to the grassroots of the game. It cascades down, from the very top. Anders Frisk was an elite level referee, like Taylor, and he retired after receiving death threats having taken charge of a game involving Mourinho's Chelsea. He has shown a pattern of behaviour throughout his career to officials.

Taylor is a highly respected referee with a high threshold for tolerance - he used to work in the prison system - and I thought he had a fine game on Wednesday. Indeed, many of the decisions he made were in Mourinho's favour. We won't get to a stage where referees refuse to take charge of games involving Mourinho but they - and everyone in the game - needs to be less tolerant of his behaviour.

Throwing a chair at that 12 year old girl was justified IMO. She may be a child now, but she is a potential future referee. The genetic defects that made Anthony a referee are probably present in his offspring.
