Stalions bought a bunch of his friends and family tickets and told them to go to the games and record the sidelines. They record the games, send Stalions the videos, and he studies the footage to figure out the signals. Then on game day he brings a bunch of notes and pretends to steal the signs during the game, and he gets lauded as a super smart sign-stealing prodigy.

How is this remotely immoral or illegal?

It's a bit outdated of a rule but it steams from a school having a million more resources than small programs so they could scout more games.

Each team has a specific and secret way of calling plays and if you analyize what is going on for enough games you can figure out what plays they are calling in real time and counter their efforts. Its unsportsmanlike and against the sprit of the game but I'm shocked it doesn't happen more often with improved technology and huge financial incentives to win games.
