Dwight Howard is a lot more than a footnote. He was an 8 time All-Star, 5 time First Teamer, and 3 time Defensive Player of the Year. The only person in the history of the NBA to win DPOY in back-to-back-to-back seasons.
But he's also a weirdo that nobody likes, which is why he spent the back half of his career bouncing from team to team, why he ended up playing in Taiwan when he should've just retired, and why he was left off the 75th Anniversary Team. An honor that Dame fricking Lillard was deemed worthy of.

Melo is on the team because of the Olympics threepeat. It's a dumb reason, since accomplishments outside the NBA shouldn't matter to the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team, but it's not like there's some question as to why he's there.
Dame, on the other hand, is there because people like him. That's it. Which not only isn't an NBA accomplishment, it's not even a basketball accomplishment. If that's the criteria they're using, they might as well have put Jrue Holiday on the team. At least that'd be funny.
