Everyone always blames Adidas for being Nazis but no one ever blames his brother's company Puma for being Nazis even though the Puma brother was the one in the Wehrmacht.

Are there even any notable German soccer players who wore #44? In America, we've got tons of star athletes who wore that number, so maybe they do too? :marseyhmm:

Either way, it really doesn't look all that much like SS bolts. If this were any team other than Germany, no one would have even made the connection. :marseyshrug:

I saw the SS bolts immediately in the thumbnail. Zoomed in, it's less obvious.

For the number, historically, it counted upward starting from the goalie and going forward. Hockey used to be like this, too, which is why so many goalies in both sports wear #1. That started to fade out over time, especially in hockey where it's long since moved to lines that play in shifts, but a lot of the number conventions sprung out of that. Double-digits usually means you wanted a single-digit but someone else on the team had it already and wouldn't give it up.

Yeah, I know number conventions have changed. In gridiron football, numbers are based around position groups, but the NFL opened it up a few years ago. Seeing players other than quarterbacks, kickers, and punters wearing single digits still throws me off. :marseyconfused2:

I meant #44 specifically, since in America we have:

MLB

  • Hank Aaron (Braves/Brewers)

  • Willie McCovey (Giants)

  • Reggie Jackson (Yankees)

NBA

  • Jerry West (Lakers)

  • Pete Maravich (Hawks)

  • Elvin Hayes (Rockets)

  • Sam Lacey (Kings)

  • Dan Issel (Nuggets)

  • Paul Westphal (Suns)

  • George Gervin (Spurs)

NFL

  • Pete Retzlaff (Eagles)

  • Floyd Little (Broncos)

NHL

  • Chris Pronger (Blues)

And those are just guys that have had their number officially retired. There's a bunch of Hall of Famers in their respective sports that wore #44, but didn't have it retired. John Riggins stands out, since he was probably the best NFL player to ever wear the number. :marcusfootball:

So I was wondering if the Bundesliga had ever had a Hank Aaron/Jerry West level superstar wear #44. Because if so, there's gonna be plenty of people out there rocking the jersey, regardless of how much it does or doesn't look like SS bolts. :marseyzwei:
