The Falcons called Kirk Cousins when they were on the clock to let him know.

From what I learned, Cousins understood a QB would be considered but he did not believe his successor would be taken in the first round. I’m told he’s a bit stunned.
Taking an older injury prone ok-ish QB with the 8th pick after signing Captain Kirk to like a shit load of money.

When I saw this I assumed the Cousins deal was 2 maybe 3 seasons. I had to look it up. The Cousins contract was for 4 years and they took a 1st round QB? I'm all for developing instead of throwing a rookie QB to the wolves day 1, but... that's either a wasted 1st rounder or they end up paying Cousins big bucks to sit on his butt or play somewhere else.
That's... a move

You guys took a QB first round that sat his entire rookie contract and it ended up working last season.
My guess is they wanted to trade down but weren't getting the price they wanted from anyone.

I'm not against it for 1-3 years, it's just don't they have to shop around a fairly big Kirko contract after those 2 or 3 years or just take that salary hit? Kirk is getting up there

People love giving Kirk money.
Like I said, they probably didn't think they were picking a QB. Just kind of happened.

They can cut Cousins after two years.
They were probably always going to. He has like a 60m cap hit his last two years if they don't

Penix is already going to turn 24 in about 2 weeks.

Get him a walker, smh. I really don't watch college ball because it's usually watching a clown show, but I don't get that mentality of delaying via NCAA technicalities. Like bro, college should take you 4 years. Glad you can stomp on the 18 year olds in the playground, but you gotta move up at some point and actually get tested if you're serious about this. It's spiritually like huffing up Zach Wilson stats and ignoring he played against mostly shit schools because covid shit.

This draft class had the extra covid year of eligibility, so they could stay longer.

My bud was pretty pissed they didn't trade down. Crazy talent void causing some really desperate moves this draft.

As I understand it, the spin from the Falcons now is that because Kirk is so good, they won't be in a position to draft a QB this high for the next few years, so they had to draft now.
The likeliest answer is that their board changed on the fly, which meant they could trade down, but no team was offering what they wanted and they're facing a clock, so they took Penix. To me, that's why they reached out to Schefter within seconds of going on the clock to say "we really might take a QB, please team that wants a QB, we'll take your calls."

Cousins is really good, not his fault the Vikings had a ridiculously pathetic defense.
