Do they realize it's probably some stupid store policy and they ask men too? Shoot it's probably more for men because half of them will never ask for help.

The worst place to be a handyman is Ace Hardware though. I make a game out of going into Ace and getting what I need without one of their extremely fricking annoyingly helpful associates stopping me. You need a whole game plan to accomplish this.

I only really use it to buy random parts last minute, that'd be such a waste of time.

Must be different where you are. I go to there specifically because they might have a single clerk on a good day and even then they go out of their way to avoid talking to you. Shopping bliss.

Ace Hardwares are all individually franchised I think so you get really different vibes at different ones. In California and Arizona they're always buzzing around you, idk if it's some loss prevention thing or they wanna suck me off in the back behind where they redo screen doors.

The average man here calls AAA to swap in spare tires so I won't disagree

It's probably that the wagie doesn't know where whatever specific nails she's asking for are located. Instead he knows the different sections of the store. It's for decks? Aisle 12. It's for roofing aisle 52. For hanging a door? Aisle 37.
