I'm always taken back to that one butterfly effect episode of Scrubs. In both scenarios, Carla gets pissed of at Turk regardless of if he stands up for her ('What, you think I need your help?') or doesn't ('What, you're just going to stand there?').
If OPs boyfriend showed up unnanounced in person to apologise she'd still be pissed off because he'd be putting pressure on her or not respecting her space or something.
