So why is mental illness so ubiquitous nowadays anyways? Is it an increase in diagnosis? The asylums being shut down in the 80s or whatever? Or is there some other factor that's making people nutzo?

The leftist theory is that society is fricked up and that having to deal with the realities of capitalism would leave most people mentally ill. It does seem like the normal behavior is being pathologized and diagnosed as mental illness now.
