Am I the only one who didn't know that the entire internet is literally wired physically with undersea cables?

Two people anywhere on the planet touching an internet router are both touching the same physical object, made out of a gigantic knit of optical fiber with routers at the tip of each strand!

Woah dude, it's like some kind of 'interconnected net' of computers bro. :#marseyrasta:

Computer nerds are all about "m-m-muh layers of abstraction" until god forbid someone doesn't understand some pointless detail of the particular layer that some other nerd really cares about. If I have to think for even a second about memory allocation, it means you wrote a shitty garbage collector.

The whole fricking point of TCP/IP is packets go wherever and nobody has to care what the underlying transport mechanism is.

If I have to think for even a second about memory allocation, it means you wrote a shitty garbage collector.

Garbage collectors aren't magic lmao you still shouldn't unnecessarily thrash them, unless you're writing something so simple that performance is irrelevant. Not to mention that you can still have "memory leaks" in garbage collected languages (okay not technically "leaks" but you can unnecessarily keep large objects around until your heap fills up, like adding shit to a list and never removing it).

I do wonder what she thought we used if not undersea cables. Maybe she thought we used satellites, and before satellites there simply wasn't any instantaneous communication between America and Europe?

I think a better comparison would be an architect not understanding the underlying physical principles on an atomic level behind the chemical reaction that happens when you pour cement.

And said architect probably doesn't need it either.

It's like when ASM-spergs rant about how everything should be written in a low-level language, because your average react dev doesn't know how it's all translated into machine code.

From 30 seconds on her xitter, she seems to be studying AI/robotics in open ended problem spaces where there isn't one narrowly defined reward function for it to optimize on.

open ended problem spaces where there isn't one narrowly defined reward function for it to optimize on.

But no applied problem ever comes with a "narrowly defined reward function." *

The first step towards solving it is figuring out how to translate it into something that can be solved with the cowtools available to us.

(* if it seems like one does, it's only because 100 (or 2000) years ago someone already figured out that first step)
