The same basic concept was actually codified into Canon Law in the medieval era in Catholicism too. Marital/conjugal debt is a good guiding principle but open to abuse and has served as fodder for misogynists to run wild. A friend of ours was forced into a divorce despite being deeply catholic. Her husband, while a friend, is a dirtbag and it was the right call

That said, her extremely catholic aunt made her break down at thanksgiving because she rightfully assumed the wife wasn't putting out. Something to the effect of “a good man only runs around if he isn't taken care of at home”

She was spot on about their s*x life being completely dead for my understanding of the situation

You're allowed to have s*x during infertile periods/after menopause etc. I didn't defend the idea that men should force themselves onto their wives, but if you want a happy marriage I think responding to the desires of your partner is a healthy practice.

If you're actually curious you can look at St. John Paul II's Theology of the Body https://stmarys-waco.org/documents/2016/9/theology_of_the_body.pdf for a deeper explanation of why. The Church was actually very prescient in their predictions of what would occur societally with the adoption of birth control and abortion. People today aren't as happy as past generations, Catholics believe that these topics are directly interrelated.

That's a happy coincidence of women not always being fertile. You can't deny that fertility is a core aspect of Catholicism. It is of all Abrahamic religions really, but they are on top with some sects of Islam and Orthodox Jews. Mormons are even allowed to use contraceptives for frick sakes.

It's not a coincidence, it's nature. No !Christians (Mormons don't count lol sorry @TracingWoodgrains ) allowed contraception prior to the Anglican Lambeth Conference in the 20th century. It's historically anachronistic to assume that modern sexual ethics are good or desirable social norms.
