none of this accounts for base rate. How many people identified as trans in the 7 years prior vs how many people identified as trans in the 3 years after? Everywhere else saw a massive increase in trans identification. And those are most likely predominantly people who were depressed, and saw being trans as the new fad solution to depression. Not just random people who happened to have gender dysphoria.

People typically self-harm because the pain distracts from mental anguish or a sense of numbness. In addition self-harm is typically a behavior that is done spur of the moment to alleviate suffering often with long periods of being 'clean' from sh, whereas a hormone regimen must be purposely chosen over and over again on a scheduled and sustained basis. The lack of detransitioners suggests that using hormones as a form of self-harm is not a common occurrence if it even occurs at all

I don't think it's as big of a shift as people think. Most of the numerical increase is they/them non-binaries, of whom a small minority will take minor steps like temporarily microdosing testosterone or maybe yeeting their teets.
Most of the changes are just people repressing less and transitioning earlier. I didn't know HRT was a thing until i was like 16-18 years old (my parents didnt let me watch springer), i thought all
s were just crossdressing 50 year-olds and i had already resolved to repress for many years by that point so i tried to put it out of my mind. There's so much more information out there about what the progression of dysphoria looks like and what HRT can actually do for you. Furthermore i think a lot of transbian types who might have ordinarily repressed for life have a harder time with it because it's both seen as more acceptable to transition but also because even if you try to repress you have chuds & progressives constantly reminding you that transitioning is an option. Thats not to say repression would be preferable for these people, repping is usually a confusing and unhappy experience characterized by desperate hedonistic coping mechanisms. It's a good thing these people are

I think thailand suggests transsexualism will stabilize, a 12 year old can walk to the shop and buy estrogen and nobody cares and they still only have 1% trans.
The NB stuff is very dependent on gender abolition to an extent where its almost a different movement, one could imagine a society 200 years out where more people go by they/them because babies are made in laboratories and s*x differentiation becomes less important
Or it could recede a little in the future if socially conscious trend chasers find that a fursuit gets them more attention and asking people to use they/them isnt worth the effort/reward.
I do think though it is unlikely transsexualism will recede much short of a humongous crackdown on information and invasion of bodily privacy. Testosterone and estrogen and progesterone are all globally widely available substances and everyone knows what's up now
