Feels like Hamas leadership took the wrong lessons from the insurgencies in Afghanistan and Vietnam, when they should have been looking at what happened to rebel groups in Sri Lanka and Chechnya. The former two had fronts where the enemies were coming from far off, while the latter fronts were right on the enemies' doorstep. If the invading forces' civilians aren't under major threat it's just a waiting game, and the atrocities against non-combatants that are terrible for media coverage will almost certainly be on their side. But when it comes to fighting organized governments that are literally right next to you the use of attacks on civilian populations, especially suicide attacks, just serves to take the international heat off of you. There's no clock that's running out of time for an enemy that lives right next to you. In fact their populace will demand blood, even when it ensures more violence down the road.
