Amazing game: There legitimately hasnt been a game like it since it was released. GF and I play it hotseat on an old emu - but try to find a modern tbs with comparable gameplay depth and hot seat functionality. Go ahead I'll wait. Wargroove is the only one afaik and it came out pretty recently.

AW came out in 2001 (sept 10thbtw). For nearly 22 years Advanced Wars has been king of hotseat tbs gameplay.

Edit: And the best part is that the DS version can be played completely with a mouse!
