I noticed some years ago that it's been a while since I played a game that was actually hard. Not "die a thousand times until you learn the meta" hard, but actually mechanically hard to play beyond preparation. Something that involves actual skill and knowledge to beat. Anyone got any ideas?
Update: Old games that only people above the age range of 30+ play don't count because no one but old people are going to realistically bother with those. Superman 64 also doesn't count because it's only hard because it's broken fundamentally. Backgammon does count because it's one of the world's oldest games.

I was about to say "you literally just described fighting games" lmao
FGs are usually even more involved/difficult than your typical team-based, competitive shooter; because it's 1v1, you and your opponent are literally trying to get into eachother's heads the entire match (if both players are competent at the game). The layers to the mindgame onion are insane. I am a complete scrub, and still, I have not found a vidya that gave me a bigger high (and I mean that very literally) than fighting games. Beating someone who you know is better than you/has beaten you a bunch before is a high that can't really be replicated by any genre I know of. It's like the high you get after beating a difficult soulsborne boss x100.
