I love AoE2, got both the main and the Conquerors expansion for Christmas 1999(ish), got banned from the multiplayer network for being under 13, but i just can't do the multiplayer anymore.
Casual multiplayer died in 2008. Now it's all neurodivergently high level players who oh man we're at 4 minutes 38 seconds and you aren't researching castle age yet? Just resign, you already lost
Heck, this is my banner on my old reddit account. Built a dock before I fully explored
There's no casual multiplayer anymore. Last time I played, things like "elo" and "the ladder" didn't exist and people had fun.
I bought the newer versions, hate how they redid all the menus so I'm not sure which campaigns I already did and which I didn't. It used to be organized by expansion and sorted nicely.
I have to finish RDR2 before I can think of playing it again. Been chipping away at it for close to a year now but lately this car project has been taking up all my time
oh shit I've recently gotten addicted to this game again. Did they get new civilizations? Also graphics look different. Is there some dlc or something?

Yes and yes. New civs with unique functionalities, and the Definitive Edition basically turned every aoe2 sprite into a 4k 3d object and scaled back down and pixilated. Buildings even collapse when they go down.
oh shit I need to get that. I never got into multiplayer in this game. I tried it but I like AoEII for relaxing no stress gameplay when I don't feel like dying on single player or dealing with asshats on multiplayer. I'm watching the stream and it seems so stressful lol
AoE2:DE has this whole thing set up for new players to get into multiplayer but it just confirms these types of games are not for me. You're supposed to practice your dark age build order until you get it under a certain time to get competitive and it feels like fricking homework. I just like playing single player rts campaigns and being el cid and shit
Same! I tried once and I swear to god I had trebuchets in my city within 5 mins. lmao Like wat? I am still here making my farm symmetric ffs. lmao
The AI is sometimes stupid. I hate playing boards with rivers, because my team mate and the others just build a shit ton of ships when they are useless. Also, my team mate never builds a frickin market. But I still prefer it as a relaxing game experience.
lol yeah I have it set to locked teams and no wonder win. I want to just devastate everyone. It turns into a 2 hour game, so it's good for a jump in and play and you're done for the night.

One RTS that still holds up well for me is the original, Dune 2.
It was designed entirely with single player in mind so there isn't that frantic need to keep up with what your opponent might be doing. It's almost more like tower defense.

It wasn't a huge hit when it came out, but if you saw it you realized immediately this was gonna change the world. It was quickly ripped off by the original Warcraft and the same team did Command & Conquer. And the RTS boom of the 1990s began.

Just practice your build order in 4v4 team games. Then resign 30 mins in when the first unit reaches your base.
That's what everybody does.

I played a team game with AI and didn't lock teams, so my allied teammates both became enemies and attacked me.

T90 was another big one, but he took a chance on Facebook streaming. He's coming back to twitch and will likely run/stream/cast more
