What years best looking game do the average AAA titles match now?
I think the mid tier graphics from high end games today match high graphics settings from say 2018 high end games. That's just my opinion though.
What do you guys think?
Is there a noticeable difference in graphics quality every half a decade even now?

Game graphics clearly Still have lots of space to improve even in current year. The primary advantage next gen unreal engine seems to provide is the upgrade in character animation and movement. All previous generations kind of sucked at giving a natural flow to human movements across the environment. That seems to have been solved for now and should become a common feature in the coming years.
PS6 will likely be when games will feel like a true next generation experience as the PS5 feels more like a FPS and basic QoL upgrader rather than anything unique that stands out completely.
What's your take on the future of video game graphics?

I disagree. There were clearly vast improvements in terms of hair texture, skin texture, lighting, crowd density, etc.

The recent updates to Unreal Engine 5 look impressive, but I think we're going to start hitting diminishing returns on graphical fidelity in the coming years. There's only so much we can do to increase resolution before the difference is too small to even notice anymore and it won't be able to justify the performance hit. The next big leap will likely be realtime AI image enhancement. With more advanced AI, we could likely achieve far greater graphical fidelity at less additional cost by feeding vector data of a modestly detailed environment to an AI image enhancer. We're already partway there with recent upscaling technologies being implemented and utilizing vector data to create stable images that properly understand the frame by frame direction of movement in a 3D environment.

we have hit the wall in terms of competence and direction. The people manning AAA studios are 50 something r-slurs who are in charge 
of 20 something r-slurs on the merit that they made slop 20 years ago with different 
tools to a different 
standard on a different 
engine.

The eyes are the window to the soul. The horse's windows are too wide. The soul escapes them when they are still young. I genuinely feel as if horses may not have been made by God. Demonic origins maybe? If any priests would like to weigh in please do.
