It was okay. It had all the trademark Rockstar railroading.
It's hard to go from a Bethesda game to Rockstar. Sure it won't crash every 5 minutes, but you have to do everything exactly how the developers intended it to be done. If you try to get creative with it, fission mailed.
Rdr1, you need to set up bombs in the road to attack a caravan. It just tells you the general area. I spread my bombs in a straight line and waited until the first person in the caravan reached the front bomb. It's the obvious choice to take out as much of the convoy as possible.
Well that's not what the developers wanted. You're supposed to target one specific part of the caravan, so when it crossed the halfway point your sidechick yells
WHY DIDN'T YOU BLOW THEM UP and everyone starts attacking. Bitch, they were five feet from the bomb I was going to detonate. Let me do my thing.
They also take
NPCto the extreme. You can't interact with any non-quest character beyond HEY THERE. Josh wants a book. You cannot ask Josh, the other camp members, townsfolk, general store owners, or librarians about that book. You just have to find it. You need a harmonica. Good luck. If you see a character playing a harmonica, that's not going to help you. You can't ask them or take it from their corpse.You cannot interact with the trapper at night. He's going to continue standing there 24/7 but he's closed.

Agreed. I like GTA and RDR but the Rockstar formula makes me question how much of a “game” I'm actually playing beyond just using movement to position my character to the next cutscene followed by a brief gunfight which leads to a chase and then ends in another gunfight before I move to the next cut scene which leads to a gun fight followed by a chase which ends in another gunfight.

Rdr2 is better about it, but rdr1... if you're playing with a controller, it's impossible to play without using autoaim. You're constantly being sniped by a handful of pixels on the horizon. Rdr1 came out back when a good chunk of people were still playing on CRT.
And you get unique gameplay mechanics like the hot air balloon, but you get to spend the entire time staring at the UI in the corner to see what you're supposed to do now. Every big event, you're looking in the corner -- does it want me to twirl the sticks? Tap X repeatedly? Hold LT?
Then the occasional bullshit like "we're going to go into letterbox cutscene mode, but you still need to control your character"
Though Bethesda never spawned me inside a train when fast traveling. Sure they spawned me on top of a landmine, but never a train

It was super fun when some modder gave me billions of dollars so i could just do what i wanted and play the game instead of grinding boring missions that are designed for you to fail anyway. Once rockstar took my money away i never played again

I know everyone's sick to death of GTAV but you can't deny just how great a game it is and it's still fun to load it up and frick around with buddies online. Probably one of the greatest games ever made and an amazing piece of software.
