I feel like it's getting even worse lately.
I barely leave comments on Reddit nowadays, but like half of them get replies from someone pedantically trying to refute something I said, which they misinterpret most of the time anyway.

The one I get all the time lately is interpreting everything as absolutes. They know that's not what it meant but they can't help themselves and think they got an easy gotcha. But then you can just reply with 'would you think my statement is true most of the time?'. Then they can't not respond because they need to have the last word, and they can't agree with it because that would be admitting defeat, but they can't disagree either because they know it's a true statement so they usually just end up getting really mad. It's pretty funny.

Oh yeah that's more or less what I meant by misinterpretation. Always taking the least likely/least common way you could've meant something and trying to pick a fight over it.
