There are legit reasons to have characters that don't look too attractive. Like if you were watching Breaking Bad and it was cast full of models you'd have problems taking it seriously. People irl don't look like models and it would just take you out of the immersion.
It seems like game designers and their fans don't understand the practical reasons for that choice though and consider it a moral issue that more ugly is more moral. It's a nice example of morals in general tbh, rules that has or had a practical purpose but get followed mindlessly by people who don't understand what that purpose is.

This isn't TV where the audience needs the show to make sense to be drawn in. It's fantastical slop entertainment for maximum power fantasy escapism and/or cooming.
You can disagree with the majority of people on what you find important in a video game and that's fine but if you're a developer and do so don't then expect people to buy it or not complain about it.
