I'm playing the new fishing expedition and I don't want to warp anymore because I think my next warp is gonna be a freighter battle and I don't frick with the haulers so I'm making a shit ton of ionized cobalt with refiners so I can get a fighter or exotic or something before I can even really get going on the expedition. Am I turning into a gek? Should I keep myself safe?

Pro-tip: Even if you get into a fight you didn't want there's almost always a way out. If you are getting attacked by fighters in space,you can summon the space anomaly (press the X button to see the menu for it) and then fly into it where they can't get you. If you're being attacked by sentinels on a planet just dig a tunnel into the terrain and hide in it until they go away.
To get a better ship it might be better to respond to distress signals (can get maps to find them from a cartographer at a space station or on the anomaly). You will eventually find a downed ship that you can claim for free, but you will need to find and use resources to repair its components.

This sounds like an AI generated response. To take the distress signal thing even further you use the maps until you have one of each event, then find the downed ship with a pilot and remember where it is so you don't go there. Then every map you use is always a free downed ship.
My ship full of cobalt is a good money maker early on. Every warp I'm getting like 9mil profit and slightly more cobalt.
