Players don't like the surgery scars and pronoun stuff because it makes the wish-fulfillment nature of the game too transparent.

It's one thing to picture yourself in a standard fantasy adventure setting, it's another altogether to be in one that caters to your every whim at all times and in ways that make no sense in the context of that world.*

Am I r-slurred that this wasn't ever true for me? I never see myself in characters I play. Maybe it's cause the games I started with you always generated an entire party (think might & magic, wizardry, ...)?

I never saw myself as a character either, but a lot of people do. I always experienced games as an outside observer who influences the action and dialog.
