As someone with a hacked switch and no PC strong enough to emulate switch, this doesn't really affect me much. I'll start fearmongering in earnest when they shut down dolphin tho. I do kind of wonder if nintendo is going to keep pulling moves like this and the palworld thing to see how much they can get away with without significant reputational harm.

Why do you think nintendo (or any jap vidya company for that matter) hasn't aggressively legally pursued emulation, hacks, fangames, and mods in the past, despite the fact that you and I both know they dont want any of these things to exist? Because they aren't stupid and recognize the money required to go after these things is not worth the potential damage to their reputation. This isn't complicated.

They really haven't. They've gone after a few things here and there, but they're usually pretty careful not to overdue it and risk poking the hornets nest/setting legal precedent. You've still got emulators on app stores, you've still got large modding communities for their most popular games, and you've still got custom firmware on github for the switch actively being developed. In my opinion, they've done slightly more than the bare minimum I would expect from a large Japanese company.

But what if they hadn't?

in the past, emulator devs knew what and what not to do, everyone knew not to link ROMS sites or allow discussion of piracy on official channels.

the zoomers are ignorant of both history and law.

Neighbor the billions of normalstrags that enjoy Nintenslop games give 0 shits about piracyneighbors in 2024. This might have been a thing 15-20 years ago if Nintendo was being particularly mean cause that was the golden age of piracy but most zoomers and millennials are completely fine with paying for shit nowadays. The amount of people into "games preservation" is even tinier.

The vast majority of people will not care about Nintendo bringing down the hammer on the basement dwellers who are into emulation.

lmao the adult children who play their games will literally never turn on them

they've been a morally bankrupt company for a long time, they're basically the Oracle of game developers, and yet they still make a killing selling substandard consoles and cartoon games to play on them

>they've been a morally bankrupt company for a long time, they're basically the Oracle of game developers

How exactly is "hey, you can't develop an emulator for our current Gen console" morally bankrupt? They literally just don't want their products stolen.

>and yet they still make a killing selling substandard consoles and cartoon games to play

Because they actually make fun games, which every other company seems to have forgotten how to do.

I do not think tempest is referring solely to this. I personally would not go so far as to call nintendo morally bankrupt, but they have made some pretty scummy decisions in the switch era. Joycons, artificial scarcity on a shoddy collection of 3d mario games, locking qol features behind amiibo in a game they're already overcharging for, the abject fricking mess that is the current eshop, asking people to pay $20 a year for the same shitty online they've always had, placing harsh restrictions on the competitive smash scene and basically kneecapping its potential for growth, to name a few.

I know for a fact tempest isn't someone to complain about the lack of :!marseytrain:s.

They've also had shitty practices in the past that were struck down by antitrust lawsuits in the late 80's to early 90's.

Nintendo is not your friend. They sometimes make good games but they will bite your limbs off if they feel like it.

Went for the 100% option because they're going after youtubers again. That's just something no other company does except maybe some tiny developer that consists of ten terminally online people and even that is super rare.

Let's also not forget emulation is legal. I think one of the two (Ryujinx or Yuzu) was including firmware or something at one point which is not legal, but Nintendo's strategy is just to swing their army of lawyers micropeens around and scare people off of doing anything they might not like with their properties, :marseygrouns: or not.

IIRC neither were including firmware (I think that might have been Skyline, the Android Switch emu), though Dolphin includes some signing keys or something like that that were extracted from the GC BIOS. Yuzu probably had a good chance of winning in court if they could've afforded to fight, but Nintendo had records of them talking in Groomercord about fixes they were making specifically for TOTK before the game officially released, meaning they probably had illegal copies.

Can't believe the clown butt Yuzu devs (who knew their project was under scrutiny from Nintendo's legal team) would be r-slurred enough to not do everything in their power to distance themselves from

Piracyneighbors crying and pooping their pants about how mean and unfair Nintendo is being are stupid. "MUH BIBEO GAYMES PRESERVATION!!!" Shut the frick up you dumb neighbors.

I have pirated games and will continue to pirate games, but that's simply because I don't want to pay for shit. I'll pirate indie games and software from broke butt developers too cause frick em if they can't enforce their copyright protections on me.
