A lot of the joy is in discovery. Drop in an escape pod on an alien planet, figure it out. Survival elements add some sense of peril, but they're also light so you graduate past them to getting more of the plot. The worldbuilding guides you to new abilities that allow you access to more places you could see but which were too dangerous or impractical to reach. Honestly once you get to the late game and have mastered most of it that's when it gets less good.
