There's currently some sort of Star Citizen Con (yes, really) going on and they promised that the game will release in 2026. This time for sure!!! Sadly it crashed during the demo on stage - twice. There's a viral article about the game called 12 Years and $700 Million Later, What's Going on With Star Citizen's Development? with reddit reactions in this thread. Lots of coping and seething in all related subreddits brewing. The grift that keeps on giving!

the guy designing the game got fired from microsoft for doing the same thing to freelancer, he couldn't finish the game due to the feature creep. He will never let this go, the game will never be finished as he considered freelancer his magnum opus and it was stolen from him.
I don't even think he's grifting, he's the video game nirvana fallacy in human form. He's looking for absolute perfection so he can prove everyone wrong about freelancer.
Some of the stuff he wants doesn't even have technology in place to be made possible, so they're trying to create it from scratch.

Gacha games exist.
Actually no, regular gambling games exist, and I don't think you even get real money from it.

Probably through the lid of the wachine and the door of the dryer, I imagine.

I wouldn't be suprised if the biggest star citizen donors were criminals.

The original kickstarter backing wasn't bad, but then they kept selling shit and idiots continue to buy that's the problem. At one point, they literally sold a ship that was still in the concept phase that was built around gameplay (electronic warfare) that was not only not in the game, but wasn't even on the development plan yet. It sold for hundreds of dollars and sold well.
Star Citizen did right what Disney fricked up with Star Wars. Instead of chasing a new audience that doesn't care (nu-Star Wars), Star Citizen aimed at PC g*mers from the 90s that are older that have tons of disposable income and a wiliness to spend it on crap.
Not only does the studio not have an incentive to release the game, they are actually disincentivized to do so. A tight, well playing game means the whales don't throw money on vague concepts and promises because they're too busy playing the real thing.
