IIRC they pretty much abandoned and then restarted development anew of the game like three times 6-8 years ago. They worked on it for awhile and then scrapped it because EA wanted a live service game and then they abandoned and restarted it again like two years later because EA realized that the live service game genre was failing. And then they started development of the current game like four to five years ago but coof and a bunch of the devs getting moved to Anthem delayed it again.
