THAC0 is especially r-slurred in 2e because armor class is arbitrary in it. AC being shorthand for specific types of armor made sense which is why different weapons had different to-hit tables, once it started going negative in 1e it became nonsensical and should've just been ascending like in later editions.
It helped filter normies but it was also r-slurred, it's axing was for the best. Diablo II and World of Warcraft are more responsible for thousands of normies flooding into 3e than removing THAC0.
