Its so funny to me for some reason that you have the movie armageddon that basically required us to send up oil drillers to plant nukes hundreds of feet deep into an asteroid, and in reality all you have to do just just smash a satellite into it and momentum will do the rest.

I mean this ones like a 100m wide asteroid, the meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs was around 10-15 km wide. So obviously we have to hit it with a far bigger object. Probably something a 100 times larger. Like 4 starships at once...you know what...you right we could totally survive surprise asteroid impacts as long as the program was funded well.

Now we still gotta figure out how to survive a bad solar flare or a gamma ray burst.

Couldn’t you still get away with hitting a several km wide asteroid with a regular satellite if you timed it well enough in advance? A teensy knock while it’s real far away should alternate it’s course enough, right?

Just load up one spaceship with 20 tsar bomba sized nukes and im sure youll have enough force to at least change its momentum.
