Conversely, leftoids often embrace somewhat vaguely rightoid ideals when they want to get someone fired from their job for wrongthink but can't because of union or other labor protections.

Basically, whoever has power wants to remove protections from those who don't. Those who don't have power will cry about civil liberties and such. The pendulum will keep swinging.
