I love how they gave a bunch of land to Japan, even though Japan was literally one of the Entente powers in WW1 (yes, this is from WW1 not WW2, see the upper-right corner).

The Germans were hoping that Japan would switch sides if the US entered the war. This came up in the Zimmerman Telegram. The idea was that Mexico would invade America and Japan would somehow help them. It was pretty ludicrous just because of the distances involved if nothing else, but I guess Germans don't understand how big the world is. Also the fact that Japan wanted a freer hand in China and had some disputes with America about that but they weren't ready to commit national suicide over it yet.

No this is real, this was already in the public consciousness in 1916. The Japanese were fricking with us. They weren't actually going to start a war, but they were toying with the idea and Americans were fully aware of it. They were already on the path to WW2 but they weren't that stupid yet.
