Disney CEO Bob Iger tells employees he wants to ‘quiet’ down culture wars, ‘respect’ the audience : movies :soyreddit:

This just solidifies Disney only cared about profits. Equivalent to companies putting pride flags in their bios in June.

700+ comments in that thread, and not one of them points out that Disney World lost their company town status, which they'd had since 1967, because Chapek didn't know when to shut the frick up about culture war nonsense. An insane amount of money and control gone because the Board of Directors couldn't beat it into his head that "Republicans buy shoes too." :marseyblack:

No shit Iger wants to steer the company in a more politically neutral direction. He wants to stop bleeding money on things that should've been turning a guaranteed profit.

They now have to apply to someone else when they want permission to build shit. They used to be able to just ask themselves.

And that's a good thing, isn't it? How much leftist screeching have we heard about Amazon not paying taxes?

Looks like Leftists indirectly did something akin to positive anti-capitalism. Honestly good job.

In 1967, when Disney was shopping around for a place to put Disney World, they managed to convince the state of Florida to pass the Reedy Creek Improvement Act and create the Reedy Creek Improvement District. The basic idea is that for 50+ years, the Walt Disney Company was the municipal/county government for Disney World and the surrounding areas, with all the "authority and responsibility" that entails. They could levy taxes, have their own fire/police departments, pass their own zoning laws, etc. They still had to (theoretically) pay property taxes to the state, but otherwise, they were in complete control.

Earlier this year, Florida passed the Parental Rights in Education Act, also known as the "Don't Say Gay" law. Disney was neutral at first, but a bunch of leftoids got mad when they realized that Disney had donated money to some of the bill's sponsors. Because Disney donated money to basically every politician operating in their area, because they had the sweetheart deal of the century and didn't want to lose it. Chapek, being an idiot, caved to the leftoids' demands and issued a statement saying Disney was "opposed to the bill from the outset" and would be donating to various charities fighting the law.

This pissed off the rightoid Governor and Florida Legislature, so they decided to revoke Disney's special status and treat them the exact same way they treat every other company in the state of Florida. This also pissed off leftoids, because modern politics is so utterly bankrupt of anything resembling genuine moral and philosophical principles, "anti-capitalists" can be convinced to defend the continued existence of an honest-to-God company town if the company that owns said town says some nice shit about :!marseytrain:s.

Chapek had Disney subsidiaries going rogue and leftoid employees threatening to walk out. And because he apparently hasn't paid attention to anything that's happened in the past decade or so, he thought appeasement was the way to go. Despite the fact that everyone with a working brain knows these people can't be given a inch, because nothing you do will ever be enough. :marseymicrosoftpride:

The Board of Directors brought Iger back to rule with an iron fist befitting the Mouse's name. He kept these frickers in line for 20 years, and they're hoping he can do it again. But I'm not so sure. The horses are out the stable, closing the door now doesn't mean much. At least not for Disney World. And they're bleeding money on Disney+ ($1.5 billion last quarter alone.), which he probably can't fix either.

Well, not unless he's able to convince customers to keep subscribing after they stuff it full of ads, since that's the only way to make it turn a profit. But since we're talking about Disney fans here, they'll probably glue their eyes to any ads Disney cares to throw at them, like the good little manchildren and womanchildren consoomers they are. :marseydisney:

Remember the Ellen Pao saga? Terminally online losers think because they spend all day on a website they understand management dynamics, when in reality the system's playing a neat trick on them.
