Love how redditors point to Kabul in the early 70's about how advanced Afghanistan was. They can't comprehend that Afghanistan is insanely rural and remote. Tribalism is absolutely the bedrock of society there. They also gloss over the fact that the Soviets did a little coup that became their Vietnam. Where Russians and Americans failed is thinking Afghanistan is a state. Ask anyone whose been there or lives there that the nation state is completely alien. Those villages are so remote that their world is the village, the two in the valley we trade with, the one over the mountain, and the one down the river that they've feuded with for the last 500 years. We should round up redditors and send them to Afghanistan and let them try some of their totally not white man's burden ideas out on the local Taliban chieftain.
