I wish poets understood that the general population has no interest in what we do, so when we speak we are speaking only to each other. The delusion that poetry is something powerful is a straight line to all kinds of toxic positivities that are really just us lying to ourselves.

Poet says modern poetry is for poetry nerds and nobody cares about poetry anymore. Gets fired from her job at the poetry magazine

I used to work in a bookstore and we had poetry readings. I was talking with this "famous" poet one time and guessed he had made $400 from publishing his last book of poetry (going off the model of $1 per sale and based on sales to overseas and University libraries, not humans.) Freaked him out cuz I was dead on. He was like "how did you know that?" I guessed the number of libraries who pretended to give a shit and added your 15 consumer sales to your Mom and shit, bro. Poetcel BTFO.

Yep. Poets have no fans, but some University libraries buy almost anything aspirantly highbrow that exists, where's the lie?
