That is center mass at that angle in the first image. It'll hit the heart and at least one lung. The only shot available on the second image is maybe 1 lung or a gut shot.
Shooting center mass is fine if the dog is on your property, but if it isn't, go for the fastest kill possible.

I really hope no one here is r-slurred enough to need a multi sentence explanation of what center mass means. Even without touching a gun, it has use in the common vernacular.

Iβm a hunter, never shot a dog but you generally go center mass on large mammals. Their brains arenβt really large enough to make a head shot ethical or effective, a heart or lung shot is usually faster.

I agree you'd never shoot an animal in the head, under normal circumstances.
The only times I advocate for a brain shot is
When you want to kill the animal extremely quickly (say it's the neighbor's dog on your property line)
You're shooting with a pellet gun
You're shooting downwards at a charging dog at close range (at which point any hit is good)
Pitbulls are also much easier to get a brain shot on than any other dog. They usually have cropped ears, short fur, and oddly shaped forehead. On a broadside pitbull, sitting or standing, a brain shot is extremely obvious.
A heart shot won't necessarily instantly kill a pitbull, and the last thing you need is your neighbor coming home with a dead dog on his doorstep, with a heavy blood trail back to your house.
You've literally admitted to never having shot a dog. You're straight and you have no idea what you're talking about.
